In conversation: Nicholas Hytner, Alexander Armstrong, Natalie Murray Beale and Hilary Campbell

On Monday 3rd November our very own Musical Director Hilary Campbell took part in a discussion panel prior to an exclusive screening of The Choral, an event organised by the Royal Philharmonic Society (RPS) and Sony Pictures.

The panel hosted by Alexander Armstrong, included Nicholas Hytner, the Director of the film and Natalie Murray Beale, who coached the actor Ralph Fiennes on the film as well as Hilary. The insightful conversation included discussion about the making of the film, its message, and the importance of choral societies and non-professional music-making in the UK today. Bristol Choral Society also got several mentions and were highlighted as the first ever winners, with Hialry of the RPS Innovation Award.

Written by Alan Bennett The Choral resounds the enduring and precious power of music to inspire and unite communities, with Elgar’s soaring 'The Dream of Gerontius' enveloped in the wit and humanity so characteristic of Alan Bennett.

The film is out in cinemas this Friday 7 November. Perfectly pitched for both music-lovers and newcomers to the world of choral singing alike, we thoroughly recommend getting out to see it and inviting your friends!
