Could you be our next Choral Scholar?
Singers can apply for one of four choral scholarships for the academic year. Choral scholars attend weekly rehearsals on Wednesday evenings 7.15pm-9.30pm in term time, in addition to around four performances a year.
The scholarships are open to singers aged 18-30, or students in full or part time music education. They are ideal for aspiring professional singers wishing to develop their choral singing and sight-reading and as a means of broadening repertoire knowledge.
Scholarships are worth £1000 per season. There will be occasional solo/quartet/semi chorus opportunities, and also a chance for the scholars to receive coaching from the choir’s superb Musical Director.
It is expected that choral scholars will mentor our younger choral apprentices, take an active role with social media for the ensemble, and generally support the endeavours of Bristol Choral Society.
We are currently looking to recruit choral scholars for our 2020/2021 season. Interested singers are welcome to join us for a trial rehearsal. We are currently holding rehearsals both in person and via zoom. If would like to apply please download further information and an application form below. Completed forms should be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Meet Our Scholars!
Emily Nunns – Soprano Scholar
I currently hold a soprano choral scholarship with BCS. The scholarship allows me to sing a range of music on a weekly basis, assist in rehearsals and sing in at some fantastic venues. I recently sang with the choir on a recording for Radio 3 and have performed solos as part of the Come and Sing events. The scholarship bridges the gap between amateur to professional solo and choral singing whilst giving me opportunities to learn new music and develop my technique.
I read Music at Newcastle University and studied voice at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Rostock, Germany. I held a choral scholarship in Newcastle for the duration of my degree and performed as a singer and instrumentalist in the North East. Since moving to Bristol, I’ve sang regularly as a soloist and with other music groups and enjoy a career in both performing and teaching.
“I was lucky to be able to learn new ideas from our conductor, Hilary, whilst being able to develop my singing in one of the longest standing Choral Societies in the country” Ben Gutsell
Our choral scholars in 2018-19 were: Emma Huggett, Megan Rees, Ilaria Scarponi, Olly Chubb and Patrick Osborne.
Our choral scholars in 2017-18 were: Ruth Bamfield, Heather Ashworth, Tessa Deterding, Ben Gutsell and Patrick Osborne. They performed at our recent Bach Concert and were highly praised by the Bristol Post reviewer:
As if to underscore Bach’s indebtedness to the Dresden master, Heinrich Schutz, the BCS Choral Scholars gave a delightful performance of his a capella motet Die mit Tränen säen. Performing so well and so sensitively whilst unaccompanied was a great tribute to their musicianship.
