We take our season’s leave with Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs. From the murmuring caresses of Love bade me welcome to the pealing celebratory exultation of the Antiphon, it’s a work that’s familiar to many. Our other nod to ‘VW’ on the other hand is perhaps less well-known. Dating from near the end of his life, An Oxford Elegy is an atmospheric meditation, located tantalisingly just beyond the ‘dreaming spires’. To narrate it we welcome one of our own – actor, stalwart of BBC Radio 4’s The Archers, and choir member, John Telfer.
Keeping Vaughan Williams company is his friend Gerald Finzi whose delectable Romance for strings raises the curtain with a nostalgic idyll-in-miniature evoking a bucolic Eden.
