As we mark the 250th anniversary of Handel’s death, 'Messiah' remains his best-known and best-loved work.
As well as having enduring appeal, 'Messiah' is a great survivor – over the centuries it has suffered disapproval of contemporary clerics, additions and alterations by Handel himself, expanded orchestrations and performances by monstrously inflated choruses and orchestras!
Although Bristol Choral Society is a far larger choir than Handel would have written for, we aim to capture the spirit and immediacy of the piece with an interpretation that is pacy, light and positively dancing.
With the whole work sung from memory, both choir and soloists can engage with the audience in a way which accentuates the dramatic mood shifts — from the derision of the baying crowd to the quietly contemplative and then to gloriously triumphant.
We are delighted to welcome again the baroque ensemble Music for Awhile, whose playing has so enriched our past three performances of this magnificent piece.
Your Christmas starts here!
6.30pm: Free pre-concert talk by Marylynn Rouse of the John Newton Project, exploring the fascinating links between the author of 'Amazing Grace' and Handel's 'Messiah'.
The retiring collection will be in support of the Lord Mayor of Bristol’s Christmas Appeal for Children.
