One of the many extraordinary things about 'Messiah' is that it retains its freshness and impact no matter how often it is sung or heard. Written in a mere three weeks, it nevertheless supports a huge emotional range in its wonderful blend of arias and choruses: hope, despair, derision, conviction and jubilation culminate in the final uplifting and spine-tingling, great Amen chorus.
This year the dramatic narrative, using texts from both Old and New Testaments, will be enhanced by the active and costumed performance of the soloists—and the chorus singing the entire work from memory. To complete the picture, the concert will be accompanied by the wonderfully sensitive playing of 'Music for Awhile', the baroque group led by distinguished violinist Margaret Faultless.
You may feel you know this great work all too well – but this promises to be a performance with a difference and a truly memorable evening.
